Brick Street Market and Cafe, Bondurant, Iowa
An Interview with Megan Kula, Butler Cafe at the Brick Street Market
The Brick Street Market and Cafe was a dream of Bondurant husband and wife Brian and Mary Lohse. After returning home in 2000, Brian and Mary often said to themselves that the one thing Bondurant was missing was a grocery store. By 2012, they were on their way to making that dream a reality.
The Brick Street Market features fresh local produce, a bakery making most of its items from scratch in the store, and a large meat selection. Laundry and dry cleaning services are available, along with beer and wine—with wine tastings several times a month!
The Butler Cafe is a 50s-style cafe features premium ground chuck burgers and an array of toppings, lots of fun appetizers, locally-roasted coffee, and a lineup of delicious desserts. The Brick Street Market and Cafe’s motto is “large enough to serve you, small enough to know you!”
We talked with Megan Kula from the Butler Café:
Tell us a little bit about the Cafe.
We are a cafe and deli. Our cafe was named the 2014 Iowa Pork Producers #2 in the state and #1 in the Des Moines Metro Area for our award-winning Tenderloin. Along with the tenderloin, we have a great breakfast and lunch menu.
What kinds of meals do you serve at the Brick Street Market and the Butler Cafe?
We have a full menu in our cafe, serving anything from omelets and waffles to tenderloins, fried chicken, our signature burgers, Reubens, and steak.
Why did you begin using Iowa Choice Harvest’s Golden Sweet Corn?
Iowa Choice Harvest brought samples to us when we first opened and we found we really liked the corn. Another thing we liked is that this is an Iowa product, and we strive to make Iowa products a focus in our cafe.
What do you like about using Iowa Choice Harvest corn?
It tastes great, it’s an Iowa product, and it’s a great side option. We think it’s important to help local businesses!
